Two glasses of equal volume are respectively half and three-fourths filled with milk. They are then filled to the brim by adding water. Their contents are then poured into another vessel. What will be the ratio of milk to water in this vessel?

  1. A.1 : 3
  2. B.2 : 3
  3. C.3 : 2
  4. D.5 : 3
▶ Answer & Explanation

Correct answer: D. 5 : 3

Let the volume of each glass be V. In the first glass, milk is V/2 and water is V/2. In the second glass, milk is 3V/4 and water is V/4. When combined, total milk is V/2 + 3V/4 = 5V/4. Total water is V/2 + V/4 = 3V/4. The ratio of milk to water is (5V/4) : (3V/4), which simplifies to 5:3.
