Swine flu, caused by the H1N1 influenza virus, is a viral infection and hence antibiotics, which target bacteria, are ineffective against it and play no role in its primary treatment. While susceptibility can vary, the general population is considered vulnerable to novel influenza strains. Culling pigs is not a standard or necessary public health measure for preventing human swine flu outbreaks, as the virus primarily spreads between humans.
