Acid rain is primarily caused by the emission of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. These gases react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. While water is essential for acid rain formation, its oxides themselves are not the primary pollutants causing it. Oxides of hydrogen, such as water vapor, do not contribute to the acidity.
