Smallpox, a devastating infectious disease, was declared eradicated globally by the World Health Organization in 1980. This monumental achievement was the result of a coordinated international vaccination campaign. While India has made significant progress in controlling and eliminating many other infectious diseases, smallpox remains the only disease to have been fully eradicated from the country and the world.
