The proposal to translocate lions from Gujarat's Gir Forest to another suitable habitat has been a long-standing conservation effort. Kuno Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh was identified as a prime candidate due to its favorable ecological conditions and historical presence of large predators. This translocation aims to establish a second, genetically distinct population of Asiatic lions, mitigating the risk of extinction from disease or natural disasters in their single current location.
