The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, provides the legal framework for the protection and improvement of the environment. Under this act, the Central Government has the power to take measures to protect and improve the environment, including the regulation of activities that can cause pollution. The Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) was constituted by the Central Government under Section 3(3) of this Act to regulate and control the development of groundwater in India.
