Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) can be produced from a variety of feedstocks that are non-fossil in origin. Agricultural residues, such as straw and stalks, are rich in cellulose and hemicellulose, which can be converted into biofuels. Corn grain, a type of starch, can be fermented to produce ethanol, a precursor for some SAFs. Wastewater treatment sludge contains organic matter that can be processed through various thermochemical or biochemical routes to yield biofuels. Wood mill waste, including sawdust and wood chips, is another significant source of lignocellulosic biomass suitable for SAF production.
