Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) utilize a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. This reaction is essentially the reverse of electrolysis. The primary byproducts of this electrochemical process are electricity, heat, and water. Therefore, the only emission from the exhaust pipe of a hydrogen-powered FCEV is water vapor.
