What explains the eastward flow of the equatorial counter-current?

  1. A.The Earth's rotation on its axis
  2. B.Convergence of the two equatorial currents
  3. C.Difference in salinity of water
  4. D.Occurrence of the belt of calm near the equator
▶ Answer & Explanation

Correct answer: B. Convergence of the two equatorial currents

The equatorial counter-current flows eastward in response to the convergence of the North Equatorial Current and the South Equatorial Current. As these two major currents move westward, they create a region where water piles up and then flows eastward in the opposite direction of the prevailing easterly trade winds, driven by a pressure gradient.
