The Government of India designates certain languages as 'Classical Languages' based on criteria such as antiquity of its early texts, a body of ancient literature and non-affiliate tradition, the literary tradition being a unique one and the difference between the classical language and its later forms or a branch thereof. Odia was the last language to be recognized as a classical language in 2014.
