Mahayana Buddhism, which emerged as a distinct school, emphasized the concept of Bodhisattvas – enlightened beings who delay their own nirvana to help others. It also promoted the deification of the Buddha, viewing him as a divine figure rather than just a human teacher. Consequently, image worship and elaborate rituals became integral parts of Mahayana practices, distinguishing it from earlier forms of Buddhism.
