Bahadur Shah of the Gujarat Sultanate, facing threats from the Mughal emperor Humayun and the ruler of Malwa, sought assistance from the Portuguese. In exchange for their support and to secure his position, he granted them a treaty allowing them to fortify Diu. This agreement effectively led to the Portuguese gaining control over the island.
