The Ninth Schedule was added to the Constitution by the First Amendment Act, 1951. This amendment was enacted during the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. The schedule was introduced to protect certain laws from judicial review, particularly those related to land reforms and abolition of zamindari system, which were being challenged in courts.
