Pronuclear transfer is a technique used to prevent the transmission of mitochondrial diseases from mother to child. Mitochondria, containing their own DNA, are inherited maternally. This technique involves transferring the pronuclei from a fertilized egg of an affected mother to a donor egg that has had its own pronuclei removed, effectively replacing the faulty mitochondria with healthy ones from the donor.
