Bacteria and fungi are heterotrophic or autotrophic microorganisms that possess complete metabolic machinery and can be readily grown on artificial media containing necessary nutrients. Viruses, on the other hand, are obligate intracellular parasites and lack the cellular components for independent metabolism, thus requiring living host cells for replication and cannot be cultured on synthetic media alone.
