Adenoviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses. Retroviruses, such as HIV, are RNA viruses that use reverse transcriptase to convert their RNA genome into DNA, which is then integrated into the host genome; they do not inherently possess a double-stranded DNA genome. The common cold can indeed be caused by various viruses, including adenoviruses. AIDS is specifically caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which is a retrovirus.
